Friedrich Schiller

Friedrich Schiller was the German Romantic movement's second great name, alongside Goethe — poet, playwright, philosopher of aesthetics, and historian. His plays — The Robbers (1781), Mary Stuart (1800), William Tell (1804), the Wallenstein trilogy — are cornerstones of the German theatrical tradition. His philosophical poetry, including 'Ode to Joy' (set by Beethoven in the Ninth Symphony), defines a vision of human freedom through beauty that shaped European thought. He and Goethe had a famous ten-year friendship and intellectual partnership at Weimar, which is the central relationship in German literary history.
