Félix María Samaniego

Félix María Samaniego was a Spanish Enlightenment fabulist whose Fábulas morales (1781-1784) — modeled on La Fontaine and Aesop — are the most celebrated Spanish verse fables. A Basque nobleman who taught at a seminary, he wrote his fables for his students. He was also the author of erotic poetry that circulated privately, which caused problems with the Spanish Inquisition. His fables remain standard texts in Spanish school education.
