Booth Tarkington

Booth Tarkington was a twice-Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist (The Magnificent Ambersons, 1918; Alice Adams, 1921) who was one of the most popular authors in the United States during the 1910s-1920s. His Penrod novels about a mischievous Indiana boy were widely beloved. He also wrote plays including Monsieur Beaucaire (1901). His reputation declined sharply after World War Two, partly because his satirical portraits of the Midwestern middle class came to seem nostalgic rather than critical.
