Horacio Quiroga

Horacio Quiroga was a Uruguayan short story writer who is the master of Latin American fantastic fiction and the region's answer to Poe and Kipling combined. His Cuentos de Amor de Locura y de Muerte (1917) and Cuentos de la Selva (1918) draw on his experience living in the Argentine jungle of Misiones, where he farmed, built his house, and watched the jungle claim people around him. Tragedy pursued him relentlessly — his father, his first wife, and his best friend all died violently in his presence. He took his own life in Buenos Aires at fifty-eight.
