Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era and one of the supreme figures in world literature. His novels — including Oliver Twist (1838), David Copperfield (1850), Bleak House (1853), Great Expectations (1861), and A Tale of Two Cities (1859) — combined comic energy, social criticism, and sentimental power to an unmatched degree. Born in poverty after his father's imprisonment for debt, he worked in a blacking factory as a child — an experience that haunted him all his life. He was also a tireless magazine editor, public performer, and social reformer.
