Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen

Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen was a Norwegian-born American professor of German literature at Columbia University who wrote novels, short stories, and literary criticism that bridged Scandinavian literary naturalism and the American tradition. He was a friend of William Dean Howells and Turgenev, and one of the first American academic critics to seriously engage with the emerging realistic novel.
