Bayard Taylor

Bayard Taylor was an American poet, novelist, and travel writer whose translation of Goethe's Faust (1870-1871) in the original meters was long considered the standard English version. He traveled extensively in his youth — Palestine, Egypt, Central Africa, India, China, Japan — funding the journeys by writing travel books and became one of the most celebrated travel writers of his generation. He was appointed US Minister to Germany in 1878 but died in Berlin within months of arriving.
