Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Goethe is the supreme figure of German literature and one of the most versatile geniuses in European cultural history: poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, and statesman. Faust (Parts I and II, 1808/1832) is his masterwork — sixty years in composition, covering the full range of human aspiration and its consequences. The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774) launched European Romanticism; Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship (1795-96) defined the Bildungsroman. He spent fifty years at the Weimar court as Minister of State and scientific researcher (his Theory of Colors was a lifelong obsession). His friendship with Schiller from 1794 until Schiller's death in 1805 is the central relationship in German literary history.
