Henrik Wergeland

Henrik Wergeland was Norway's first great national poet, a passionate Romantic whose enormous literary output — poetry, drama, prose — helped establish modern Norwegian literary culture. He was a fierce advocate for Jewish emancipation in Norway and a committed liberal democrat. He died of tuberculosis at thirty-seven after a life of extraordinary creative energy and political controversy.
