Greek

Aesop

Aesop was a fabulist and storyteller from ancient Greece whose life is largely legendary. Ancient sources describe him as a slave who was eventually freed for his wisdom, and who was killed by the people of Delphi after angering them. His fables — brief animal stories with moral conclusions — were almost certainly oral and were collected and written down long after his death. The 'Aesop' tradition encompasses stories from many cultures absorbed into a single name. His fables have been illustrated, adapted, and retold in every century since antiquity and remain among the most widely read stories in the world.
