Robert Greene

Robert Greene was an English Elizabethan playwright and prose writer, one of the 'University Wits' who dominated the London stage before Shakespeare. His plays Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay and James IV are important precursors to Shakespearean comedy; his prose romances, including Pandosto (the source of The Winter's Tale), were widely read. His deathbed pamphlet 'A Groatsworth of Wit' contains the first known reference to Shakespeare in print, dismissively calling him 'an upstart crow.'
