Anna Sewell

Anna Sewell was a British author who wrote one book — Black Beauty (1877) — and died five months after its publication, too ill to see it become one of the best-selling books of all time. A Quaker, she was partly disabled from an ankle injury sustained in childhood and had great sympathy for horses as working animals. Black Beauty, narrated by the horse himself, was written explicitly as a work of animal welfare advocacy and was directly influential in improving conditions for working horses in Victorian England. The book has never been out of print.
