Eugène Brieux

Eugène Brieux was a French playwright of social reform whose 'thesis plays' attacking specific social problems — venereal disease in Les Avariés (Damaged Goods, 1901), corrupt medicine in Les Bienfaiteurs, the legal system in La Robe rouge — made him the leading figure of French naturalist drama in the 1890s-1900s. George Bernard Shaw declared him the greatest living playwright (above himself) in a famous preface to English translations of his work. He was elected to the Académie française in 1909.
