Mary Shelley

Mary Shelley was an English novelist who wrote Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818) at eighteen — arguably the first true science fiction novel. The daughter of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, and the wife of Percy Bysshe Shelley, she spent time in Byron's circle in Switzerland where the ghost story competition that produced Frankenstein originated. After Percy's death in 1822 she devoted herself to editing and publishing his work. Her verse dramas Proserpine and Midas (1820) are lesser-known works from the Pisa circle period.
