Richard Steele

Richard Steele was an Irish essayist, playwright, and politician who co-founded The Tatler (1709) and The Spectator (1711) with Joseph Addison — the two most influential literary periodicals of the eighteenth century, which essentially invented the short essay for a middle-class readership. His comedies, including The Conscious Lovers (1722), moved English drama toward sentimental comedy and away from Restoration cynicism. He was also a Whig Member of Parliament.
