William Carlos Williams

William Carlos Williams was an American poet and physician who practiced medicine in Rutherford, New Jersey while writing some of the most important American poetry of the twentieth century. His Imagist credo — 'no ideas but in things' — drove a poetics of concrete American vernacular that influenced the Beat poets, Frank O'Hara, and many others. His long poem Paterson (1946-58) and collections including Spring and All (1923) are his major works. He won the Pulitzer Prize posthumously in 1963.
