Alice Gerstenberg

Alice Gerstenberg was a Chicago playwright and theatre activist who was a pioneering figure in American little-theatre movement. Her one-act play Overtones (1913) — in which each character is accompanied by a second actress representing her subconscious — was a technical innovation that anticipated stream-of-consciousness drama by decades and was widely performed in the little-theatre circuit. She co-founded the Chicago Little Theatre and spent her career building non-commercial theatre in the American Midwest.
