Amy Lowell

Amy Lowell was an American poet and critic who championed Imagism after meeting Ezra Pound in London, eventually taking over the movement so forcefully that Pound renamed it 'Amygism' in irritation. From a prominent Boston family (her brother was Harvard's president), she was a formidable public figure who smoked cigars and kept a household of seven sheepdogs. Her experimental polyphonic prose and free verse influenced American modernism significantly. She died of a cerebral hemorrhage the year she won the Pulitzer Prize posthumously for What's O'Clock.
