Verner von Heidenstam

Verner von Heidenstam won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1916 and was the defining voice of Swedish national romanticism at the turn of the twentieth century. His poetry — Vallfart och vandringsår (1888), Dikter (1895) — and his historical novels — Karolinerna (The Charles Men, 1897-98) and Folkungaträdet (The Tree of the Folkungs, 1905-07) — created a romantic vision of Swedish national identity and history that influenced Swedish culture for decades.
