Rudyard Kipling

Rudyard Kipling won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 — the first English-language writer to receive it — and was the most popular poet and one of the most widely read fiction writers in the English-speaking world around 1900. Born in Bombay, his Indian childhood shaped everything he wrote: The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), Just So Stories (1902), and the Barrack-Room Ballads. He refused a knighthood but accepted the Nobel. His pro-imperialist views have complicated his reputation while his literary skill remains undeniable.
