Eugene O'Neill

Eugene O'Neill is America's greatest playwright and the only American dramatist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1936). His works — including Long Day's Journey into Night (written 1941-42, staged 1956), The Iceman Cometh, Mourning Becomes Electra, and Strange Interlude — brought a tragic seriousness to American drama that it had never previously achieved. The son of a touring actor, he spent his youth in poverty, at sea, and suffering from alcoholism and tuberculosis before finding his voice at the Provincetown Players. Long Day's Journey, his autobiographical masterpiece, was sealed against publication until after his death.
