Luís de Camões

Luís de Camões is Portugal's national poet and one of the supreme figures in world literature, author of Os Lusíadas (The Lusiads, 1572) — the epic of Vasco da Gama's voyage to India, which is simultaneously a celebration of Portuguese imperial achievement and a meditation on human ambition and mortality. He spent seventeen years in the East, lost an eye in battle at Ceuta, and returned to Lisbon in poverty. He died in the same year Portugal lost its independence to Spain, reportedly saying he was dying with his country.
