Constantijn Huygens

Constantijn Huygens was the supreme Dutch poet of the baroque period and one of the most accomplished European humanists of his age: diplomat, composer, secretary to two princes of Orange, and poet in multiple languages. His father of the physicist Christiaan Huygens, he was also a friend of Rembrandt, John Donne, and René Descartes. His long poem Hofwyck (1651), about his country house near The Hague, is the finest Dutch baroque poem and a meditation on the pleasures of retirement from court life.
