Alexandre Dumas

Alexandre Dumas père was the most successful French popular novelist of the nineteenth century, author of The Three Musketeers (1844) and The Count of Monte Cristo (1844-1845). Of partial Caribbean descent through his father, a general under Napoleon, he produced an enormous body of historical dramas, travel writing, memoirs, and fiction, employing a team of collaborators. His plays, including Henri III et sa cour (1829), helped launch French Romantic drama. He died having earned and spent enormous fortunes, and was reburied in the Panthéon in 2002.
