Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais

Beaumarchais was a French playwright, watchmaker, spy, weapons dealer, and pamphleteer whose two Figaro comedies — The Barber of Seville (1775) and The Marriage of Figaro (1784) — are the most politically charged plays of the Enlightenment. The Marriage of Figaro was suppressed by Louis XVI for four years as too dangerous; Napoleon called it 'the Revolution already in action.' He also secretly supplied weapons to the American revolutionaries and organized the first complete edition of Voltaire's works.
