Hong Sheng

Hong Sheng (洪昇) was a Qing dynasty playwright whose Changsheng Dian (The Palace of Eternal Youth, 1688) is one of the two greatest kunqu operas — a tragic romance between Emperor Xuanzong and his concubine Yang Guifei, ending in her death during the An Lushan Rebellion. The play combines romantic lyricism with political tragedy in a way that made it immediately controversial (he was dismissed from his position for performing it during a period of court mourning) and enduringly celebrated.
