Clemens Brentano

Clemens Brentano was a German Romantic poet and writer who, with Achim von Arnim, compiled Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy's Magic Horn, 1805-1808) — the great anthology of German folk poetry that influenced German music and literature throughout the nineteenth century. His own Kunstmärchen (art fairy tales), including Gockel, Hinkel und Gackeleia, are among the most elaborate and personal in the German tradition. In his later years he converted to intense Catholicism and spent years recording the visions of the stigmatic mystic Anne Catherine Emmerich.
