Charles Kingsley

Charles Kingsley was a Church of England clergyman, novelist, and social reformer whose works included The Water Babies (1863) and Westward Ho! (1855). He was Regius Professor of History at Cambridge and a Canon of Westminster, and preached what he called 'muscular Christianity' — an ideal of vigorous, socially engaged Christian manhood. His social novels Alton Locke (1850) and Yeast (1851) advocated for the working poor. He had a famous public dispute with John Henry Newman that Newman answered with his Apologia Pro Vita Sua.
