Omar Khayyam

Omar Khayyam was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet whose rubaiyat (quatrains) were largely unknown in the West until Edward FitzGerald's extraordinarily free translation of 1859 made them one of the most widely read Victorian poems. Khayyam reformed the Persian solar calendar and made significant contributions to algebra; his poetic output, relatively modest in the Persian tradition, was transformed by FitzGerald into a sustained meditation on wine, love, impermanence, and the indifference of fate.
