Kālidāsa

Kālidāsa is the greatest Sanskrit poet and playwright — the Shakespeare of classical Indian literature — whose plays Abhijñānaśākuntala (The Recognition of Shakuntala) and Vikramorvaśīya and poems Meghadūta (Cloud Messenger) and Kumārasambhava represent the pinnacle of Sanskrit literary art. When William Jones translated Shakuntala into English in 1789 it caused a sensation in Europe; Goethe wrote a famous couplet of admiration. Almost nothing is known of his life; even his century is uncertain.
