Arthur Conan Doyle

Arthur Conan Doyle was a British physician and author who created Sherlock Holmes — the most famous fictional detective in world literature — in A Study in Scarlet (1887). He published sixty Holmes stories across four decades while also writing historical novels, science fiction (The Lost World), and a vast body of journalism. He famously killed Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls in 1893 to free himself from the character, then was compelled by public demand to resurrect him in 1901. In his later years he became a committed Spiritualist, which damaged his reputation among rationalists.
