Alfred Tennyson

Alfred Lord Tennyson was Queen Victoria's Poet Laureate for over forty years and the most popular English poet of the Victorian age. His works include the elegy In Memoriam A.H.H. (1850), the Arthurian epic Idylls of the King (1859-1885), 'The Charge of the Light Brigade,' 'Ulysses,' and 'The Lady of Shalott.' He succeeded Wordsworth as Poet Laureate in 1850, the same year he published In Memoriam and married after a seventeen-year engagement. His poetry is characterized by formal mastery, melancholy, and a preoccupation with time and loss.
