Israel Zangwill

Israel Zangwill was a British Jewish author, playwright, and Zionist activist whose novel Children of the Ghetto (1892) and play The Melting Pot (1908) made him famous internationally. The Melting Pot — whose title gave Americans the phrase for their immigrant assimilation ideology — was a Broadway sensation that Theodore Roosevelt admired publicly. He was a significant figure in early Zionism but broke with the mainstream movement over the Uganda Scheme.
