John Milton

John Milton is the second great name in English poetry after Shakespeare, whose Paradise Lost (1667) — twelve books of blank verse narrating the Fall of Man — is the supreme English epic and one of the most ambitious poems in any language. Milton was blind when he dictated it, having lost his sight in 1651 while serving as Latin Secretary to Oliver Cromwell's government. His earlier works — Lycidas (1637), Comus (1634), L'Allegro and Il Penseroso — show the extraordinary range of his lyric gift. He was also a formidable prose polemicist: Areopagitica (1644) is the founding document of press freedom.
