Paradise Regained
by John Milton from 1671
About
Milton's brief sequel (1671) to Paradise Lost is a very different poem: a quiet, meditative verse dialogue in four books between Jesus and Satan in the wilderness, each of Satan's temptations refused with calm certainty. Where Paradise Lost is cosmic and spectacular, Paradise Regained is interior and philosophical. Milton valued it more highly than its famous predecessor, and some critics have agreed. As a performance text the temptation dialogues are unusually suited to dramatic reading for two voices.
