Erckmann-Chatrian

Erckmann-Chatrian was the collaborative pen name of two Alsatian writers — Émile Erckmann (1822-1899) and Alexandre Chatrian (1826-1890) — who wrote together for over forty years producing novels, stories, and plays. Their works, set in Alsace and focused on ordinary people's experience of war and history, had enormous popular success. Their anti-war novel Le Conscrit de 1813 and their supernatural tales of Alsatian folk legend are their most enduring contributions. They eventually had a bitter public falling-out late in life.
