Guerra Junqueiro

Guerra Junqueiro was the most celebrated Portuguese poet of the late nineteenth century — known as 'the Hugo of Portugal' — whose satirical poems A Morte de D. João (The Death of Don Juan, 1874) and A Velhice do Padre Eterno (The Old Age of the Eternal Father, 1885) made him one of the most controversial figures in Portuguese literary and political life. His later work, including Os Simples (1892) and Pátria (1896), turned from anticlerical satire toward lyric celebration of the Portuguese poor and landscape. He served briefly as ambassador to Argentina.
