John Gower

John Gower was one of the most important English poets of the fourteenth century, a contemporary and friend of Chaucer who wrote major works in Latin (Vox Clamantis), French (Mirour de l'Omme), and English (Confessio Amantis). The Confessio Amantis — a frame narrative of a lover confessing his sins to the priest Genius, who responds with tales from classical mythology and legend — is one of the largest and most varied narrative poems in Middle English. Chaucer dedicated Troilus and Criseyde to him.
