Ambrose Bierce

Ambrose Bierce was an American journalist, short story writer, and satirist whose Civil War stories in Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (1891) and sardonic dictionary The Devil's Dictionary remain his most enduring works. He served in the Union Army, was wounded at Kennesaw Mountain, and his war experience shaped his characteristically dark and ironic sensibility. He disappeared in Mexico in 1913-1914 while traveling through the country during the Revolution — his fate has never been determined, which has added a legendary dimension to his already colorful life.
