Charles A. Eastman (Ohiyesa)

Charles Eastman was a Lakota Sioux physician, writer, and activist who was one of the first Native Americans to write extensively in English about Indigenous life and culture. Raised in the traditional Sioux manner until his teens, he then received a Western education and earned a medical degree from Boston University in 1890. He was the physician at Pine Ridge Reservation at the time of the Wounded Knee Massacre. His books — Indian Boyhood (1902), The Soul of the Indian (1911), From the Deep Woods to Civilization (1916) — are primary documents of Indigenous experience and thought.
