Joyce Kilmer

Joyce Kilmer was an American poet best known for his twelve-line poem 'Trees' (1913) — 'I think that I shall never see / A poem lovely as a tree' — which became one of the most widely memorized poems in American schools. He worked as a journalist and literary editor for The New York Times Book Review. He was killed in action near the Ourcq River in France at thirty-one, which gave the poem a posthumous pathos that deepened its cultural impact.
