Zora Neale Hurston

Zora Neale Hurston was a monumental American author, anthropologist, folklorist, and filmmaker who served as a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Her work celebrated Black culture, traditions, and dialects, most notably in her 1937 masterpiece novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God. Despite her prolific output, she faced severe economic hardships, died in poverty, and was buried in an unmarked grave. Her literary legacy was later resurrected in the 1970s by writer Alice Walker.
