Hannah Cowley

Hannah Cowley (1743–1809) was one of the most successful and influential British playwrights and poets of the late 18th century, celebrated for her sparkling wit and forward-thinking female characters. Born in Devon to a bookseller, she famously launched her writing career on a whim after boasting to her husband that she could write a better play than the one they were watching at the theater. Her resulting debut comedy, The Runaway (1776), was produced by David Garrick at Drury Lane and became an instant success. Over her career, Cowley penned 15 plays that masterfully critiqued social etiquette and marriage constraints—most notably her enduring 1780 masterpiece, The Belle's Stratagem—earning her a reputation that rivaled contemporary male titans like Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
