William Blake

William Blake was a British poet, painter, and printmaker whose illuminated books — Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1789/1794), The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1793), Milton, Jerusalem — combine engraved text with hand-coloured illustrations into unified works of visionary art unlike anything before or since. Largely ignored in his lifetime, he was rediscovered by Alexander Gilchrist's biography (1863) and is now considered one of the supreme Romantic poets and visual artists. 'Tyger Tyger, burning bright' is among the most recited poems in English.
