Poems of William Blake

by William Blake from 1789–1794

About

Blake's collected shorter poems — Songs of Innocence and Experience, the Poetical Sketches, and individual lyrics — constitute one of the most original bodies of English verse. The Songs set paired poems of innocence and experience against each other (The Lamb / The Tyger; Holy Thursday / Holy Thursday) to reveal the same subject from opposing spiritual perspectives. Blake's language is simultaneously childlike and prophetic; his symbols are his own invented mythology. 'Tyger, Tyger, burning bright' is one of the most recited poems in the language. As group reading, the short lyrics and paired songs offer extraordinary flexibility.
