La pièce maîtresse de Rostand (1897) réinvente le héros romantique pour la fin de siècle : Cyrano de Bergerac, poète-bretteur au grand nez, aime Roxane mais se croit trop laid pour lui déclarer sa flamme, nourrissant de ses mots l'insipide Christian. La première à Paris fit un triomphe inégalé dans l'histoire du théâtre français ; Rostand devint du jour au lendemain le dramaturge le plus célèbre de France. La langue versifiée de Rostand — ses alexandrins ciselés, ses tirades fulgurantes — est un bonheur à lire à voix haute. Dans la langue originale, la pièce révèle toute sa splendeur poétique.
