Kipling's Jungle Book (1894) contains the Mowgli stories — the wolf-child raised in the Indian jungle — alongside other animal tales that are among the most beautifully written animal fiction in English. The Law of the Jungle, Baloo's teaching, Shere Khan's menace, and Kaa's hypnotic presence give the book an unusual moral weight beneath its adventure surface. As group reading, the animal characters give natural ensemble roles; 'Rikki-Tikki-Tavi' works perfectly as a standalone story.
