The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
by L. Frank Baum from 1900
About
Baum's Wizard of Oz (1900) is the great American fairy tale: a Kansas girl transported to a magical land by a tornado, searching for the way home while making friends with a Scarecrow (who wants a brain), a Tin Man (who wants a heart), and a Lion (who wants courage). The story's allegory about discovering what one already possesses has been read political, psychological, and simply as the most American of all fairy tales. As group reading, the ensemble of companions and the encounters with the Witch and the Wizard give strong character roles.
