The Fables of Aesop
by Aesop from c. 620–560 BCE (Aesop); Jacobs retelling 1894
About
Jacobs's retelling of Aesop — selected, told anew with literary polish, and accompanied by a history of the fable tradition — is among the most readable of all English Aesop versions. Jacobs was a scholar of folklore who brought real narrative judgment to his selection and retelling. The fables are brisk, precise, and drive toward their morals with admirable economy. As group reading, individual fables (2-5 minutes each) work for any age group.
Translated from the original Greek.
