The Death of Wallenstein
by Friedrich Schiller from 1800
About
The Death of Wallenstein is the concluding part of Schiller's Wallenstein trilogy — the greatest historical drama in the German tradition. Albrecht von Wallenstein, Imperial generalissimo during the Thirty Years War, has grown powerful enough to negotiate independently with the enemy; the second and third parts of the trilogy (Piccolomini and Death) follow his discovery that his officers have betrayed him and his final assassination. The Death of Wallenstein is the most concentrated and theatrically effective of the three parts, building to an ending of genuine tragic weight. Coleridge's English translations of the trilogy introduced Schiller to British readers.
